Welcome

Hi everyone, I've created this blog so that we can all have one place to put any thoughts or ideas that we would like to share with the whole group. It can serve as an easy and quick way to follow what everyone else is doing and to ask questions of everyone. This may be a little easier than email because all messages are saved in one place and you won't have to go searching through your emails to find old messages. You can also post links to this blog on the side panel. Just to let you know how it works, if you have a new topic, then you can create a new post in the upper right hand corner and if you would like to respond to someone else's post, there is a comments button in the bottom right hand corner of each post where you can go to make comments or ask/answer questions. It also shows a little number to tell how many comments have been made so you know when someone comments on your post. Let me know what you all think of this, whether you want to use it or just use emails and meetings, or if you have questions.

Brainstorming for Pre/Post Test Questions

Sarah's brainstorm notes:
- Carrie, do you have info on the student demographics and areas of interest?
1. Define health disparities.

2. Do health disparities exist?
- add questions about Springfield and the community (demographics, languages spoken).
3. Define social determinants of health.
4. How do social determinants of health affect health outcome?
5. Define cultural competence.
6. Using cultural competence in reproductive health.
7. Specific skills: interpreter services, etc.

Julie F.'s ideas:
- have a couple of sources for the answers to each question.
- get questions on national and state data and Sarah and Carrie's questions can focus on concepts.
I. Which of the following is not true of Massachusetts Birth Data from 2005?
1. The Black non-hispanic infant mortality rate was more than twice as high as the white non-hispanic infant mortality rate.
2. The teen birth rate for hispanics was more than 5 times that for white non-hispanics.
3. The rate of low birth weights for black non-hispanics and hispanics is more than double that of white non-hispanics.
(answer - 3)
II. Compared with mothers with some college education or more, mothers with a high school education or less were more likely to:
1. Smoke during pregnancy
2. Receive inadequate prenatal care
3. (other distractor ideas: deliver via cesarean section, breastfeed, etc.)
